Venosta Valley – Cultural Region in South Tyrol

The tower in Lake Reschen

Spectacular, idyllic, romantic – this is how the tower in Lake Reschen presents itself. Unfortunately, there is a sad story hidden behind it all: originally, there were three lakes called Lake Haider, Lake Mitter and Lake Reschen, which due to their warm springs, were among the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps. In order to produce electricity, a reservoir was built in 1950 and the three lakes were made into one. This is called Lake Reschen. In order to build the reservoir, 160 families had to be relocated, villages destroyed and more than 500 hectare of fertile cultural soil made unavailable. Today, only the church tower of one of the drowned villages bears witness to this event.
